What Happened:
My 8 year old son was running ahead of us at top speed through the paths in the trees between the inter river park ball field and the playground when we suddenly saw him running back to us total white in the face. He was out of breath and said he has just scared a large tan cat as he turned a corner in the path and that it jumped / ran off into the bushes. When I asked how big it was described it was bigger than a large dog. I asked him to take me to the spot and it was literally 10 feet from the edge of the park where a bunch of small children were playing. Obviously it was sitting and watching them.

The 16-year-old jumped out of his window and into the backyard, where he began screaming at the cougar. Sadler then jumped back into his room and the animal ran off.

At a laneway near Railway Avenue with his dogs Chinook, a large collie-Staffordshire terrier cross, and Sequoia, Mr. Weighell said he was a mere 50 metres from his front door when the cougar pounced. He said he heard nothing until the cat was directly in from of him attacking the dog, which was on a leash. “The cougar came up, bit onto the dog’s face and laid down right away,” Mr. Weighell said. The cougar used its weight to try to bring the dog to the ground; however, Sequoia managed to stay up. Fish and Wildlife officers have hounds on standby in case cougar tracks are found, but no traps have been set up. They’re relying on the public to report sightings.

Conservation and RCMP officers attended, Insp. Chris Doyle, the lead conservation officer for the Sea to Sky Corridor, said on Wednesday (Feb. 15). The two officers found the dead dog buried in the forest behind the house. As the officers drew nearer to the cougar's food source, the cat came out of the bush and charged at the conservation officer, Doyle said. The officer was forced to shoot the cougar, which was no more than 100 metres from Joseph's house, he noted.

Location: Doghaven Lane Upper Squamish Ellie Scott opened the back porch door to go to the firewood pile. Upon seeing a cougar a few meters away in the wood pile she immediately retreated back in the house. Looking out of the window Ellie saw not one but two medium size cougars running away at great speed through the snow. Deep snow enabled us to see tracks where the cougar had arrived and departed the shelter of the woodpile which is part of the car port. Vinnie the cat remained quietly supportive indoors from behind the couch throughout the ordeal.
